A Data Science Sub-Chapter Lead at Elia Group, the electricity Transmission System Operator for north-east Germany and Belgium. My role is mixed between hands-on work in optimisation and forecasting projects, leading a team of Energy Data Scientists, and more strategic work promoting the use of Data Science/Machine Learning in different areas of the business.

The Pop in my Job:

I love that our work has a direct impact on a critical utility. Some of our projects help our colleagues run the grid in day-to-day operations, and others are focused on helping the grid meet the challenges associated with the energy transition. Data Science/Machine Learning is a potent tool, and it's satisfying knowing that our work will play a key role in the future of the grid.

50Hertz operates the electricity transmission grid in northern and eastern Germany and is expanding it to meet the needs of the energy transition. Our extra-high voltage grid has a circuit length of about 10,490 kilometres - that's the distance from Berlin to Rio de Janeiro. The 50Hertz grid area includes the federal states of Brandenburg, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia as well as the city states of Berlin and Hamburg. In these regions, 50Hertz secures the electricity supply for 18 million people around the clock with more than 1,400 employees. 50Hertz is a leader in the safe integration of renewable energies: In our grid area, we want to integrate 100 percent renewable energies safely into the grid and system by 2032. The shareholders of 50Hertz are the listed Belgian holding company Elia Group (80 percent) and KfW Bankengruppe with 20 percent. As a European transmission system operator, 50Hertz is a member of the European association ENTSO-E.
